CrossCraze is a great word puzzle game for 1 to 4 players that plays like a cross between Scrabble and a crossword puzzle. You basically compete with friends or against the computer by placing letters on a board to form interlocking words. You can choose between "traditional" play, where new letters must be placed adjacent to existing ones, or "vertical" play where new letters can also be placed on top of existing letters to modify the words underneath. There are many nice options in CrossCraze that elevates it beyond being a mere crossword puzzle game. The registered version includes 50 levels (you can play only one in the demo, which expires after 30 games), 4 levels of artificial intelligence, and a vast vocabulary of over 180,000 words with either UK or US spelling. For additional challenge, you can activate a timer to impose a time constraint. The user interface and graphics are both excellent: you form words simply by dragging and dropping letter tiles on the board. As in Scrabble, you earn points based on the value of letter tiles, and additional points by placing tiles on bonus squares. The game is over once both the letter bank and players racks are empty. With an excellent interface, innovative gameplay, and strong computer intelligence, CrossCraze is one of the best word games you’ll ever come across. The game even includes a nice hint tool, 50 different board layouts, and the ability to add your own vocabulary. If you are a word puzzle fan, don’t miss this little-known underdog.
