Founded by ex-Origin veteran designer Paul Neurath, Looking Glass Technologies got their early brush with fame with revolutionary 3D RPG Ultima Underworld, which was hailed as one of the best games ever made due to its outstanding physical model and well-realized 3D gameworld. Looking Glass went on to develop many more games that leverage its expertise in real-world physics, spanning genres from RPGs to simulations to sports. After experiencing a humdrum period in their career when great releases such as Terra Nova were treated only with lukewarm response, Looking Glass experienced a surge in recognition and sales with amazing Thief and Thief II. Unfortunately, neither has solicited enough response to sustain the company as developer and publisher in the increasingly competitive industry-- Looking Glass has shut its doors in June, 2000. May they R.I.P. and their games live forever. Read a great timeline and interview with Looking Glass in this Gone Gold article. Related companies: Origin Systems
