Looking Glass Technologies' magnum opus before 1998's acclaimed Thief was a vast technical improvement over the earlier classics in the Ultima Underworld series. One of the most sought-after underdogs of all time, System Shock is a sci-fi action/RPG at its best, featuring a vast world, gripping plot centered around a sentient computer gone awry, plenty of high-tech gadgets, and puzzles that integrate seamlessly with well-designed 3D levels. The only downsides are the less-than-intuitive controls and uninspired cyberspace sections. Otherwise, a true classic in every respect. Note: there has been a new "enhanced" edition released by Nightdive Studios that distinctly does enhance the experience with better controls and tons of QoL-improvements. The same team is busy working on a ground-up remake as well.
