Synergistic Software, heretofore a small European developer, was among the pioneers of "hybrids"-- games that defy traditional definitions of genres. Synergistic's World Builder engine combines real-time strategy with RPG-like character development, all wrapped in a traditional adventure plot and interface. Synergistic games are always fun to play and re-play due to numerous subplots and optional puzzles. Overall, the games are quite easy, and at times the computer takes over the action so much so that the player's interaction is reduced to clicking the mouse to advance the scripted action. Nevertheless, these are immensely enjoyable games that also sport better graphics than most of its contemporaries.Synergistic should also be credited for picking intriguing but rarely-used subjects for the World Builder games: the fantasy world of Conan and the legend of King Arthur are both fertile grounds for adventure/RPG games. The company was bought by Sierra sometime in the mid-90s, and the company changed its name to Eclectic Games and continues to develop games as a Sierra subsidiary.
