Ochakumi is a neat little arcade-style game from Japan that plays like an office version of Pac-Man. In the game, you play a cute anime-style secretary who has to collect various items that appear at random. But along the way, you must avoid bosses and other menacing office workers who roam around the screen. Seated on a swivel office chair, you move by pushing on the ground in front of you, propelling the chair backward as in real life. This takes some getting used to, since the "UP" arrow key is used to mean "push" - so pressing UP could make the chair go down the screen if your character is facing upward, with her back to you. You can also move by pushing against walls by pressing the spacebar. Naturally, this makes you go much faster than usual, and is the only way you can momentarily stun the enemies - by smacking into them from walls. Once you finish collecting all the objects on the screen, you will be taken to a new level. The game is played from a top-down 2D perspective, and the graphics is very crisp and attractive. There are many different kinds of enemies, and each new level - an office floor layout - brings with it new challenges and decor. The game also runs in a window - making it ideal to ALT+TAB back to work when your real-life boss comes around ;) If you like simple, mindless arcade fun with a sense of humor and an anime touch, look no further than Ochakumi. It is fun, addictive, and a testament to the fact that even anachronistic and heavily-used game concepts like Pac-Man can be fun if the right twist is applied. Two thumbs up! Reviewed by: Underdogs |
