The Alchemist is one of the most addictive and beautiful puzzlers I've come across in quite a long time. As is typical of excellent puzzle games, the game concept is quite simple: you pick up the set of vials in the bottom right corner of your window; another click deploys the set on the game board. Rotating the set clockwise, you task is to arrange the vials of the same color to recreate the pattern shown to the right of the board. In case you manage to do it, they will evaporate along with any adjacent set of the same color. You get a few precious points, and clear the place for the coming sets. No space for the coming set means the end of the game. The game provides thirteen boards with differing layouts and differing patterns that you must reproduce. Each board has its own ‘High Score’ list and you are able to post your score to the Alchemist website from within the game. The beauty of this game is that it is very, very addictive-- imbued with that elusive "just one more game" flavor that every game strives to achieve. After one game, you are compelled to try it just one more time to beat your own score. The Alchemist also boasts gorgeous SVGA graphics and excellent classical ambient music. Suffice it to say that if you only want to buy ONE new puzzler this year, buy this game-- it is that good. Two opposable thumbs up! Reviewed by: Underdogs |
