Silmarils
Silmarils   #75

Games developed: 19
Games published: 19
Period: 1988 - 1998

Although relatively unknown to U.S. gamers, Silmarils was a French company that has long established itself in Europe as a quality developer of unique action/adventure and RPG hybrids that combine outstanding graphics with captivating plots set in exotic locales. Perhaps true to the famed French heritage of unbridled creativity, Silmarils is particularly good at evoking the intriguing alternate history of 19th-century science as created by Jules Verne (who was, incidentally, French) and immortalized in his novel 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Games such as Boston Bomb Club and Transarctica are among the best of their career.

Unfortunately, Silmarils' strong points are often overshadowed by awkward interface, sub-par writing, and extremely difficult gameplay that border on the absurd. Such sadistic difficulty level makes playing Silmarils game a tortuous affair for most gamers, but perhaps a welcome challenge for die-hard veterans who found most games too easy.

Silmarils produced a good many games for ReadySoft, its licensee. ReadySoft was acquired in 1996, leaving Silmarils without a publisher for its games. This means that recent Silmarils games were available in Europe only, as Silmarils lacked the marketing capabilities to distribute their games overseas. Grolier Interactive did distribute its last game Asghan before the company went bankrupt sometime in 2003.
