One of the oldest game developers, Interplay was founded by Brian Fargo in 1985. Its early games were published by Activision. In addition to maintaining a large in-house design team famous for classic RPGs such as the Bard's Tales series, the company is an influential publisher of titles developed by independent design houses, including Parallax's Descent series. Interplay has also made a name for itself by producing games based on popular licenses, including the original Star Trek television series. The company's U.S. operations are joined by an extensive overseas distribution arm that is releasing such popular games as MDK. In 1999, French publisher Titus acquired a majority stake in Interplay. After several quarters of financial troubles, Interplay filed for Chapter 11 in 2004 as its parent company Titus went into bankruptcy proceedings in France.
