Without a doubt THE best CD-ROM about philosophy ever made, and one of the most unique and original programs you'll ever find, Sophie's World is an amazing adaptation of Jostein Gardner's best-selling book about a girl's introduction to Western philosophy. Similar to the book, Sophie's World is hard to describe – it is part game, part exploration, part encyclopedia, and part sheer wonder. You can go through the "story" of Western philosophy at your leisure in the same way Sophie does in the book – under guidance of her mysterious philosophy teacher Alberto. There are over twenty 'virtual environments' that present the user with philosophical puzzles and challenges which, when solved grant access to the next screen and epoch in philosophy. As a research tool, Sophie's World offers the Reference Band and Philosophy Map to access a comprehensive database covering twenty-eight key philosophers and eight epochs from Ancient Greece to the 20th Century. You can also interact with characters, and Alberto is always at hand for any question you have about the origins of the universe and other great philosophical debates. Great graphics and an intriguing storyline bring the history of philosophy alive. And if all that isn't enough, the "Big Question" feature groups all philosophers in the program by the big question they try to answer. If you're thinking of buying ONE educational CD-ROM this year, this is it. Highly recommended. Reviewed by: Underdogs |
