One of the world's premier toy brands, Mattel was involved in gaming history as early as 1980 with the introduction of Intellivision, an 8-bit console that competed head-on with Atari's classic console. The first Intellivision games, produced by an outside software firm, were so successful that Mattel started a new company -- Mattel Electronics -- to develop games in-house. In 1999, the company bought The Learning Company (which owned SSI at the time), only to sell it away at rock-bottom price to Gores Technology Group, a private buyout firm.
